I love a strange story as much as anyone, but there are satellites everywhere now. Can we put observation time, direction and duration in our posts? That would help those of us trying to check instead of just agree.

#2

north_window, I get your point, but the title sounds like you are telling people not to post uncertain sightings.

#3

Fair criticism. I mean the jump from "moving light" to "visitor", not that everyone should know every satellite.

#4

Can we have a checklist instead of a telling-off? Direction, time, duration, whether it flashed?

#5

orion_runner, yes. Those details would be a better starting point. Also where the observer was standing.

#6

And make "I do not know" an acceptable answer. People invent precision when they think uncertainty will get them mocked.

#7

Some of the older sightings predate the tracking sites people keep linking. A failed lookup is not much help there.

#8

saturn_return, agreed. No match on a tracker is not proof of a craft, and a present-day tracker will not solve every old memory.

#9

My own first report had the direction completely wrong. I went back in daylight and discovered I had confused two roads.

#10

That is the kind of correction I want people to feel safe posting. It should not cost them membership in the conversation.

#11

I have been too snappy about it. Sorry. I will ask for details next time instead of starting with a verdict.

#12

There is room for believers and skeptics if neither group demands the conclusion before the description.

#13

How about keeping observations separate from guesses in the same post? "I saw this. I wondered if it meant that."

#14

Yes. I can disagree with the guess without accusing somebody of lying about what they saw.

#15

That works for me. My title was a grumpy version of a useful point. Thanks for pushing back.

#16

Leaving this bookmarked for the next moving-dot argument. Which will probably be tomorrow.
